Ngee Ann City Singapore Overview

On September 21, 1993, Ngee Ann City officially opened.

The area on which Ngee Ann City now stands was once a cemetery in Singapore owned and operated by Ngee Ann Kongsi in the 1950s and was a portion of the Tai Shan Ting property. The Ngee Ann Building, which had ten stories, was later demolished to create room for Ngee Ann City.

The Ngee Ann City site was first contemplated for redevelopment in 1967. In the late 1980s in Singapore, Ngee Ann Development and the Orchard Square Development Corporation planned Ngee Ann City. The Great Wall of China served as inspiration for the complex’s architect, Raymond Woo. The architect of Ngee Ann City also intended Ngee Ann City’s two towers to resemble Chinese door gods, which stand for power, generosity, and unification.

Two office towers in Ngee Ann City Singapore, Tower A and Tower B, each stand 26 stories high. The second-largest bookstore in Southeast Asia, Kinokuniya, and the Takashimaya department store are only two of Ngee Ann City’s many stores. On the fifth level, Ngee Ann City hosted the Library@Orchard, a division of Singapore’s National Library Board, until 2007. The biggest Best Denki in Singapore, known as Big Best, is located in Ngee Ann City. The first of its type in Singapore, the Ngee Ann City’s fourth-floor iFORUM art and creativity space debuted in 2005.

Tangs Studio, a branch of Tangs, had three floors of space in the Tower B section of the Ngee Ann City when Ngee Ann City first opened in 1993. Level 2 of the department store was shut down in 1999 as a result of weak sales a few years later. This area of Ngee Ann City was transformed to the iForum in 2005, becoming a component of the specialty shop sector (mostly branded boutiques) on Level 2, Books Kinokuniya on Level 3, and a shop section primarily comprised of children’s boutiques and businesses on Level 4. The fifth storey of Ngee Ann City was transformed from a carpark space into retail space in 1997.

Roadshows, concerts, events, performances, and other activities take place at the Civic Plaza. In front of Civic Plaza of Ngee Ann City, on the side facing Orchard Road, there is a fountain.

Ngee Ann City office tower’s tenants include Ngee Ann Development, Books Kinokuniya, Metro, Takashimaya Singapore, some tenants of private offices, and a hospital floor on Level 8 of Tower B.
