Thomson Plaza Singapore overview

Owned by Mercatus Co-operative Limited, Thomson Plaza is a shopping centre which first opened in 1979 and has since gone through renovations to make it modern with new shops and food options.

As part of its strategy to decentralize commercial activity away from Singapore’s Central Business District, the Ministry of National Development gave the go-ahead for the construction of Thomson Plaza in 1977. The Development Bank of Singapore, the designated land developer for Thomson Plaza, gave the contract to construct this complex to Japanese construction firm Ohbayashi Gumi. Thomson Plaza ultimately cost $38 million.

Retail stores and shops expressed a lot of interest in Thomson Plaza even before it was finished in Singapore.

Japanese retailer Yaohan, the forerunner of department stores in Singapore, opened their third location in Singapore at Thomson Plaza. However, due to its overexpansion and rising rental prices in Singapore, the parent company of Yaohan outlets was declared insolvent in 1997. As a result, Yaohan closed its final location in Singapore, Thomson Plaza, in 1998.

The MRT to use to get to Thomson Plaza is Upper Thomson MRT station (TE 8) and use Exit 1.
